A Beginner’s Guide to Making Homemade Hummus

Hummus is a Mediterranean classic that’s easier to make at home than you might think. With just a few ingredients and a blender, you can create a creamy, flavorful dip that’s perfect for snacking or serving at gatherings.

The Basics

Start with cooked chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth, adding water as needed to achieve your desired consistency.

  1. In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and salt.
  2. Process the mixture for about 1 minute, scraping down the sides as needed.
  3. With the food processor running, add water, one tablespoon at a time, until the hummus reaches your desired consistency.
  4. Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt or lemon juice if needed.
  5. Transfer the hummus to a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with paprika and parsley if desired.
  6. Serve with pita bread, veggies, or as a spread.
