From Seed to Sprout: A DIY Guide to Seed Starting

Starting plants from seed is cheaper, more rewarding, and gives you access to unique varieties that stores don’t carry. Plus, watching tiny sprouts emerge is one of the best joys of gardening!

Step 1: Choose Your Seeds Wisely

• Beginner-friendly options: basil, lettuce, tomatoes, marigolds.
• Read seed packets for germination time and light requirements.

Step 2: Pick the Right Containers

• Use seed trays, egg cartons, or even mason jars for an aesthetic touch!
• Ensure proper drainage to prevent mold.

Step 3: Choose a Light, Well-Draining Soil

• Use a lightweight seed-starting mix instead of regular potting soil, which is too dense.

Step 4: Provide the Right Light & Temperature

• South-facing window? Great!
• If not, use grow lights 2-3 inches above the seedlings.
• Keep temperatures between 65-75°F for optimal growth.

Step 5: Water Wisely

• Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
• Mist with a spray bottle or bottom-water seed trays to avoid disturbing delicate roots.

Step 6: Harden Off Before Transplanting
