These classic, buttery cookies with a jam-filled center are easy to make and a delightful treat for little hands to help with.   1. Preheat & Prep – Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Make the Dough – In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg yolks and vanilla extract. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until just combined.
  3. Shape the Cookies – Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  4. Create Thumbprints – Have the kids gently press their thumbs (or the back of a spoon) into the center of each dough ball to form a small well.
  5. Fill with Jam – Spoon about ½ teaspoon of jam into each indentation.
  6. Bake & Cool – Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Optional Dusting – Once cooled, lightly dust with powdered sugar for an extra special touch.

Store-Bought Dough Variation

Short on time? You can still enjoy these delicious cookies using store-bought sugar cookie dough! Simply:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll the store-bought dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Press a small indentation in the center of each dough ball using your thumb or the back of a spoon.
  4. Fill each indentation with about ½ teaspoon of jam.
  5. Bake according to the package instructions, usually around 10-12 minutes, or until the edges turn golden.
  6. Let them cool before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar for a finishing touch!
